Somali police have killed two suspected al-Shabaab fighters following a shootout in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
In a Twitter post, Somali police deputy chief, Zakia Hussein confirmed the incident saying the men tried to force their way through a security checkpoint.
“The security forces killed two al-Shabaab members who tried to force their way through a checkpoint manned by the soldiers in Seipianno of Hodan district,” she said.
Ms. Hussein praised the officers who engaged the men for eliminating dangers operatives.
The move comes hours after the forces foiled an attack in Mogadishu.
Somali police and other security agencies have stepped up operations to hunt al-Shabaab sleeping cells in the city.
Al-Shabaab lost control of Mogadishu in 2011 after its fighters defeated the Somali military backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
