Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has welcomed the re-election of Moussa Faki Mahamat who lead African Union Commission for the next four years.
Mr Faki, a Chadian was elected unopposed, something that had always been expected after the AU said he was the only contender.
He got 51 votes out of 55 with three abstentions and one other member being ineligible to vote.
In a Twitter post, president Farmajo congratulated Moussa Faki Mahamat on his re-election as Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission for a second term.
“Congrats @AUC_MoussaFaki on your historic and overwhelming re-election to lead @_AfricanUnion for another term. Extension of your mandate is a vote of confidence in your leadership of steering Africa ahead. Somalia supports you and your Deputy @mnsanzabaganwa forward,” the post reads.
He will be deputised by Rwandan banker, Dr Monique Nsanzabagwana, who was until Saturday the deputy governor of the Rwandan central bank.
Her election went through rounds that were mostly an East African affair. She defeated Uganda’s Prof Pamela Mbabazi and Djibouti’s Hasna Bakarak Daoud.
