Somali National Army has battled with al-Shabaab following an attack on a military base in Lower Shabelle region.
According to reports, al-Shabaab attacked SNA base in Elsalini village in early Sunday morning, prompting fierce clashes.
The reports say the group used Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED) to hit the gate of the base, the fighting ensued.
Locals and military officials confirmed that Somali forces fought back, forcing the group’s fighters to retreat. The base is now under Somali military.
In a statement on its affiliate media, al-Shabaab claimed to have taken control of the area saying it killed several soldiers and made away with vehicles.
