Number of fighters have been captured alive and several other eliminated after an attempt to attack SNA bases in southern Somalia went wrong, military official.
A military official who spoke to state owned media said the militants attempted to overran bases in Elsabidi and Anole villages near Afgoye but were repulsed.
Army official hinted they had prior information about the attack from al-Shabaab fighters.
According to the official, the military killed several fighters and captured others.
The official did not specify exact number of the fighters killed and captured during the attack.
Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the claims by the military.
Previously, al-Shabaab fighters had attacked military bases in Lower Shabelle region several times, causing heavy casualties on the soldiers.
Al-Shabaab lost large swath territories to Somali military backed forces of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The group frequently carries out IED and ambush attacks on the forces and government officials in and outside of Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Al-Shabaab lost the capital in 2011 following days of heavy clashes allied forces.
