Kenyan security agencies have accused one of main telecommunication company in Somalia of financing attacks against masts owned Kenyan companies.
In an article published by Daily Nation, Kenya’s largest newspaper, an alleged security report claimed that Hormuud Telecom has been financing al-Shabaab to destroyed telecommunication masts along Kenya’s border with Somalia.
“The telco wants to have a complete monopoly in Somalia along the Kenyan border and 50 kilometers into Kenya in order to shut out Kenyan telcos,” the report states.
The paper further said report claimed the company is alleged to be paying al-Shabaab up to US$3 million.
The development comes barely three weeks after Hormuud accused Kenyan military of targeting its masts in the south end of the country.
The company said it has borne heavy losses accumulating to millions in terms of provision of phone and data services to its customers since 2018.
In its latest report, Hormuud said Kenyan troops detonated mast for Somalia’s largest telecommunication company for the 12th time in less than two years.
“For the 12th time this year, KDF has detonated our masts in Aws-Karun at Gedo region of Jubbaland. The attack took place on August 22nd. The troops used powerful machines to destroy the equipment,” the company said.
The company is urging the African Union, the United Nations, and AMISOM to intervene and prevent the troops from degrading international community’s integrity.
