A delegation from Somalia’s feder al government has toured Qardo district in Puntland state to assess the damages caused by the recent flooding.
The team led by the Minister for planning and international cooperation, Gamal Mohamed also delivered humanitarian supplies to help families affected in the last week calamity.
” Honored to lead a government delegation to flood affected town of Qardho to deliver urgent aid and assess the support needed for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the destroyed infrastructure.
After surveying the damage, we met Puntland’s President, officials and key elders.” Gamal Mohamed said.
The delegation later held meeting with regional officials led by Puntland President, Saed Abdullahi Deni.
They discussed the immediate steps needed to restore people’s livelihood and the long-term durable solutions to strengthen community resilience while ebuilding the local economy.
“More needs to be done to mitigate future risks and discussions will continue to be paired with action.” The planning Minister said after the meeting.
Six people lost their lives and scores others sustained injuries following the flooding in the cultural city on Tuesday last week.
The federal government has delivered much needed humanitarian supplies to several parts in the country affected by the flooding, Bardere was the latest following River Juba flooding.
In Beledweyn which was most affected by the catastrophe, last year locals with help from experts from the government have started building sandbags along the river banks to reduce the effects of the water.
