The African Union has called for an immediate end to the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia between the federal government and regional Tigray forces.
The military launched operations in the northern region of Tigray following the escalation of the conflict.
“The Chairperson appeals for the immediate cessation of hostilities and calls on parties to respect human rights and ensure the protection of civilians,” Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairman of the African Union Commission, said in a statement.
AU chair urged the parties to engage in dialogue to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the country and said the 55-nation bloc was ready to support an Ethiopian-led effort to solving the crisis.
The Chairperson also reiterates the continued readiness of the African Union to support an inter-Ethiopian effort in the pursuit of peace and stability.
Ethiopia’s air force has bombed military assets in the region, the PM Abiy Ahmed said the operations will be limited and surgical as death and injuries of both civilians and rebels are reported.
