The United Nations Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission, James Swan has underscored the need for unity between the federal government of Somalia and its regional member states.
Speaking during a meeting with Puntland leader, Saed Abdullahi Deni in Garowe on Monday ambassador Swan stressed the need for Somali leaders to urgently come together in order to overcome their differences.
“it is the view of the United Nations that Somalia’s leaders must urgently come together, in a spirit of national unity, to overcome differences and find consensus on how best to move forward, in the interest of the Somali people,” the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, said.
The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission said the international community is very concerned about the risks posed by the current political impasse between the Federal Government and Federal Members States in the country.
Issues including elections, security, and development were among those covered in discussions between UN envoy and Puntland state leaders.
The violence in Sool and Sanaag region was also covered in the discussions, particularly the need to bring an end to and creating space for peacebuilding activities, and ensure the necessary conditions to allow the United Nations to expand its support to the local population.
