Somalia is expected to receive 1.2 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine from the World Health Organization, official confirmed on Wednesday.
Interview with VOA, Mamunur Rahman Malik, the WHO head in Somalia said the first batch of the Covid-19 vaccine is expected to arrive in Somali in February.
According to WHO and Somali government, the shipment is meant to cover 600,000 frontline health workers,.
Mr. Malik confirmed that the country also expects get more doses in March and April to cover 20% of its population.
The 1.2 million vaccine doses will be handed over to the Somali government for free, but it will need to buy more vaccines to immunize the remaining 80% of the country’s population.
Somalia which confirmed the first case of coronavirus in March last year has so far recorded 4,814 cases with recovery of 3720.
The disease has claimed lives of 132 people across the country, according to Somali health ministry. The current active cases are 962 active cases.
Somalia which suspended local and international flights in mid March following an uptick in COVID19 in the country but resumed the operations in last October.
