A high level delegation led by Somali deputy prime minister Mohamed Mahdi Guleid has travelled from the country for Hague ahead of oral proceedings of a common maritime boundary at the International Court of Justice.
Addressing the media, before he left for Hague, Guleid said Somali government and its legal team will ensure to struggle for the rights of Somalia and its people.
“Today, we are traveling to Hague to participate in the oral proceedings at ICJ, Somalia has a hope and will try its best,” he said.
The oral proceedings will run for five days until March 19. Last Month, the International Court of Justice declined Kenya’s request to delay a case for the fourth time.
The court said that despite Covid-19 guidelines on physical gatherings, “there is a possibility of a limited number of representatives of the parties to appear in person in the Great Hall of Justice, with the other representatives participating by video link.”
Somalia and Kenya are seeking a resolution on the ownership of a 150,000 square-kilometer (58,000 square-mile) area off their Indian Ocean coastline, which both countries want to explore for oil, gas and fish.
In 2014, Somalia went to court to challenge a 2009 agreement that set its maritime border along latitudinal lines extending 450 nautical miles into the sea.
