Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo congratulated Samia Suluhu Hassan on her inauguration as the first female president of Tanzania.
“Farmajo extends warmest congratulations to H.E President Suluhu Samia as she assumes office as the 6th President of the United Republic of Tanzania. The President, on behalf of the Government & the People of Somalia, conveyed best wishes to the nation following the transition,” Villa Somalia said in a Twitter post.
Tanzanian Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in Friday as the country’s first female president, two days after the death of the country’s president John Magafuli.
Hassan took the oath at the statehouse in the city of Dar es Salaam in a televised ceremony on state TV.
Suluhu Hassan began her political journey in 2000 after she was elected as a special seat member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and appointed a minister. At the time, she was the only high-ranking female minister in the Cabinet.
After serving two terms, she sought election to the National Assembly in 2010, winning the vote by more than 80%.
President Jakaya Kikwete appointed her as the minister of state for union affairs and in 2014, she was elected as the vice chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly tasked with drafting Tanzania’s new constitution.
In 2015, Magufuli selected Suluhu Hassan as his running mate — a surprise choice over many more prominent members of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
