Somali government has called on the countries in the region to enhance their joint efforts to degrade Al-Shabaab.
Speaking when he hosted diplomats in Mogadishu for dinner, Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has underscored that his government committed to enhancing counterterrorism.
“Despite the security, we believe that Somalia has a bright future, this has been proved by the public who stood against the terrorists,” said President Farmajo.
The president emphasized the need to cooperate on fighting Al-Shabaab saying the group is a threat to the regional security.
The remarks of Somali president come barely five days after the cabinet agreed to
Scale up the fight against terrorism.
The country’s defense ministry has pledged to implement military plans to defeat the group.
Recently months, the country’s troops backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has increased operations against al-Shabaab in South and central Somalia.
Al-Shabaab, which once controlled a large swath of southern was forced out of many major towns in south and central including the capital city.
The group now operates in remote areas but tries to launch deadly attacks in major towns.
