The Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia has conveyed its condolences to the French government over the killing of 13 French soldiers in Mali on Tuesday.
The soldiers have been killed in a helicopter collision during an operation in the West African state.
“The Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia conveys its deepest condolences and sorrow at the death of 13 French soldiers whilst on a mission in Mali to fight terrorism.” A press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said.
“ Somalia stands steadfast with France in its fight against terrorism.” It added.
President Emmanuel Macron expressed “deep sadness” over the biggest single loss of life for the French military since the 1980s.
An investigation has begun into how the two helicopters hit each other.
Thousands of French troops have been deployed in Mali since 2013 after militants overran parts of the north.
France has more than 4,500 troops deployed to support the forces in former colony states of Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad against the insurgent groups.
French Defence Minister, Florence Parly vowed that her country would not turn its back on the fight against terrorism after the deadly collision.
