Somali forces have killed at least 25 al-shabaab fighters in operations in Somalia’s lower and Middle regions barely six days after country’s elite forces eliminated ten fighters and injured several others in another operation in Middle Shabeelle region.
Somali National Army (SNA) chief, Odawa Yusuf Rageh who spoke to the media confirmed the operations, saying the army intensified the fight against al-shabaab group.
According to Rageh, the forces also destroyed al-shabaab bases the during the operation.
“Somali army killed 25 militants and wounded about 15 others. We have also managed to destroy several al-shabaab bases in Bal’ad and Jowhar districts,” SNA boss told the military owned radio.
Rageh vowed that the military will continue the fight against al-shabaab fighters in southern Somalia.
He did not clarify whether there were casualties on SNA soldiers during the operation.
Somali military backed by troops from African Union Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) have intensified operation to liberate villages under al-shabaab in Lower and Middle Shabeelle regions.
The horn of Africa Nation is expected to hold parliamentary and presidential elections.
In a statements posted on their online affiliate media, Al-Shabaab vowed to disrupt elections and warned Somali people against participating the exercise.
The group which once controlled large swath territories in south and central Somalia was weakened following fierce fighting with Somali military in the past years.
Al-shabaab currently control few towns in Lower and Middle Jubba and Shaballe regions.
The group also carries out deadly bomb attacks in major towns. Last Friday al-Shabaab suicide bomber riding tricycle had rammed into Lul-Yemeni near Mogadishu port, killing over twenty people and injuring more than thirty others.
