Relatives said the former diplomat died Tuesday night in Ohio following hospitalisation in the past few days. They did not however reveal the circumstances which led to their kin’s death.
Omar served as ambassador to the U.S during the sunset years of Siad Barre administration for two months between November and December of 1989.
He subsequently worked in the US embassy in Canada.
Omar announced his bid for the presidency in Somalia last October.
