Burundi soldiers working under the framework of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) will benefit the government of the United States (US) allocation to AMISOM.
The troops will be a major recipient of President Donald Trump’s allocation meant for this year.
A substantial proportion of the $25million earmarked for African forces will go to the accounts of the Burundi soldiers, according to the Indian Ocean Newsletter
The funds whose discretion to spend is solely with the President without having to seek Congressional approval is a one-off contribution.
The Burundi contingent is the second largest within the AMISOM with 5,432 troops, after Uganda which has more than 6,000 troops.
Burundi has been active in the African Union Peacekeeping Force in Somalia since 2007.
