AU envoy to Somalia condemns Kismayo attack

The special representative of the chairperson of the African Union for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Madeira has strongly condemned the al-Shabaab attack in Kismayo hotel on Friday.

“I strongly condemn the horrific terrorist attack in Kismayo.” Ambassador Madeira said.

The head of AMISOM said the attack was senseless and coward while sending condolences to the families of the victims.

“I send my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the innocent victims. They were honest, hardworking men and women. Terror can’t win, and won’t win in Somalia.”

Jubaland regional state confirmed 26 people were killed and 56 others were wounded in the attack that lasted more than 12 hours.

One fighter was captured alive while three of his colleagues were killed by security agencies during operation.
Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Prime Minister Hassan Kheyre also strongly condemned the attack.

The attack comes as the region is gearing up for leadership elections slated for next month.
