Somali forces have killed several al-Shabaab fighters and three others captured alive following heavy clashes with the militants on Tuesday night outside Somali capital Mogadishu.
In a statement, Somali military said its forces foiled attack on a checkpoint manned by paramilitary forces in Hawa-Abdi locality.
“Somali military has successfully defeated al-Shabaab fighters who attempted to storm a security checkpoint at the vicinity of Hawa-Abdi. Number of al-Shabaab fighters were killed and three others captured,” SNA statement said.
The attack comes a day after SNA claimed to have killed it killed 20 al-Shabaab fighters in Middle Shabelle region.
The fighters were killed during operations in the villages of Warahley, Ali Fooldheere and Qurah-madobe
Somali military has recently stepped-up operations against al-Shabaab fighters.
The operations in the south and central regions have killed more than 300 al-Shabaab fighters since last month.
