Somali leaders to meet over poll process in Mogadishu

Somalia’s federal and regional state leaders will meet next week in Somali capital barely a month after election agreement was signed.

In a statement, Somali prime minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble said the meeting would be a follow up of last FGS-FMS forum which took place in May.

“Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble invited the leaders of the National Consultative Assembly to a meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday to discuss the electoral process achievement since the May 27th agreement and the acceleration of the remaining tasks,” the office of PM said in the statement.

Late last May, Somali Political leaders agreed on a framework for long-delayed national elections which are slated for August this year.

The agreement, that would allow elections within 60 days, was an outcome of the summit convened by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, after months of escalating tension between the political factions in Somalia.

Under the 17 September Electoral Model agreed in 2020 between the federal government and the leaders of the federal member states, verified clan elders would elect a parliament, which then would elect a president.

The parliamentary elections were scheduled for December but then delayed.

The Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET) and its regional level counterparts will prepare elections calendar.

Some of the other issues dealt with in the new agreement include security and administration of Gedo region.
