At least two people have today died and five others sustained injuries after several mortar shells struck residential houses near Halane base houses AU troops and western diplomatic missions in Mogadishu.
Witnesses and the local media reported that among the victims were a father and an infant. The injuries were taken to different hospital in the capital for treatment.
Sources in the compound who spoke to Anadolu on condition of anonymity confirmed that several mortar shells also landed in and around the airport, where the UN compound is located.
Al-Shabaab has claimed the responsibility for attack, saying the fighters targeted the Halane base camp which houses the UN and African Union with number of motor shells targeting.
Neither Somali government nor UN and AU have commented on the incident.
Today’s attacks come barely barely two weeks after a similar one early this March. Several people were reportedly injured in the attack.
Al-Shabaab lost control of the capital in 2011 after days long fighting with Somali army backed by African Union troops. The group still controls dozens of villages and towns in south and central Somalia.
