UPDATE: Somalia to rest its case at the ICJ Thursday

Somalia will conclude its legal case to the ICJ on Thursday at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the international court confirmed in a statement.

It will be the last day of public hearings in the maritime case against Kenya.

Somalia began its oral arguments on Monday and continued through  Tuesday.

Kenya was scheduled to present its case to the court on Thursday between 3 PM and 6 PM and on Friday from 3 PM to 4:30 PM, but it notified the court that it would not participate in the hearings.

The presiding judge in the case, Joan Donoghue, refused Kenya’s request to address the court for 30-minutes at the start of the hearings.

The ICJ-  sometimes referred to as the World Court – is the United Nations’ judicial arm. The court hears disputes between nations in accordance with international law.

The court is a panel of 15 judges elected to a nine-year term by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council. The court has heard 178 cases since its inception in 1945.
