Somali security forces have neutralized seven Islamic State fighters in the northeastern region of Puntland.
The operation was conducted in Timirshe town in Iskushuban district in the coastal Bari province on TuesdayAccording to regional security officials, the security forces seized weapons and food supplies for the fighters in the elite operation which killed key foreign figures.
“Senior Somali and foreign figures were neutralized in the attack; the head of operations and international relations is among the dead.” Puntland Security Force said in the statement on Wednesday.
According to witnesses, Somali forces were backed by US air support during the operation in the mountainous areas which is a favorite hideout for the ISIS allied fighters.
The US has since confirmed the attack saying it was in support of its local partner forces that came under attack from the insurgents.
Islamic State has previously claimed several explosive attacks carried out in the port city of Bosaso last year.
