Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has appealed to the citizens in the country to unite in helping their brethren affected by floods.
The head of state made the call from Dhusamareb in Galmudug state where he is leading a meeting between the leadership of the Federal Government and counterparts from the Federal Member States to dialogue on the model of elections to be conducted in the country.
President Farmajo assured the residents of Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region affected by the calamity that the federal government was taking action to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the floods.
“We share the grieve with affected citizens by the floods from river Shabelle in Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region, we call for a concerted effort by the citizens to provide necessary humanitarian assistance.”
Officials from the Southwest state led by the governor of Lower Shabelle region Ibrahim Adan Ali visited the affected area on Tuesday to assess the damages caused by the floods.
The Shabelle River, which begins in the Ethiopian highlands and flows through Southern Somalia burst its banks following the onset of Haga heavy rains which began last month.
Other states affected by the heavy rains include Hirshabelle and Jubbaland.
The heavy rains and flash floods come a year after a devastating similar floods left over a half a million people in Hiran region displaced.
