Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has commended the Lower and Upper Houses of parliament for working round the clock in passing the crucial election law.
Speaking during a press conference in the capital, Mogadishu on Sunday the chair of the commission, Halima Ibrahim described the bill which was signed into law by President Farmajo in February as a historic step forward.
Mrs. Ibrahim also appealed to the members of the houses of parliament to speed up the political parties bill to complete the process of holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections next year.
Under the new election laws, the citizens will vote directly for parties, with parliamentary seats being allocated according to the final tallies. Members of parliament will then elect the president and prime minister. The prime minister must come from the majority party in parliament.
Security will remain the biggest challenge to implement the new election procedure as the country gears up for the historic process early next year.
