The United States (US) has called on Somalia’s political stakeholders to resolve their differences to allow elections take place in the country.
In a statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged the leaders to set aside ‘narrow political objectives’ and to hold ‘transparent and inclusive elections’.
“We call on Somalia’s federal and member state leaders to set aside narrow political objectives, uphold their responsibilities to the people of Somalia, and agree to immediately hold transparent and inclusive elections,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
US expressed convern over the current deadlock, which is creating political uncertainty that threatens security, stability, and development in the country.
“The current impasse undermines progress made to date, delays reforms urgently needed for Somalia to continue on the path to full debt relief, and hinders the fight against terrorism,” US official said.
Somalia was expected to hold elections early this year but the political differences between the federal government and its member states have forced postponement of elections.
The leaders of federal government and regional states are scheduled to meet in Somali capital in the forthcoming days.
