United Nations (UN) has welcomed the restoration of the diplomatic ties between Somalia and Kenya
In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended the role played by Qatar in mediating for the restoration of diplomatic relations between Somalia and Kenya.
“Guterres expressed his hope that the declarations issued by the two countries in this regard would lead to the restoration of full friendly relations between Kenya and Somalia, which are essential for stability and cooperation in the region,” said United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
The move comes two days after Somali government announced that it will restore its diplomatic ties with Kenya barely six months after the horn of Africa nation severed relations with the East Africa nation over alleged internal interference.
“The two governments have agreed to safeguard the friendly relations between the two countries based on the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of the two countries, equality, cooperation and peaceful co-existence,” Somali Deputy information minister, Abdirahman Yussuf al-adala said.
Last December, Somali government Somalia cut diplomatic relations with neighbouring Kenya, accusing it of meddling in its internal affairs.
The horn of Africa nation called back its ambassador to Kenya and ordered Kenya’s ambassador to leave the country.
