United Nations (UN) has commended the efforts by Southwest state leader, Abdiaziz Hassan Lafta-garen to resolve the dispute over Somalia’s electoral process.
UN delegation led by James Swan, the special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has today visited the administrative capital of Southwest state.
The delegation was welcomed at the airport by Southwest state leader and some of his cabinet members.
Speaking to the media after meeting with Southwest state officials, James Swan expressed appreciation for South West State President Laftagaren’s efforts with the country’s elections.
The envoy reiterated the need for a spirit of consensus and collaboration going forward in order to hold inclusive elections in Somalia.
The leaders of Southwest, Hirshabelle and Galmudug states have been carrying out efforts to end differences between Somali government and opposition.
Somalia is expected to hold elections this year as mandate of the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo comes to an end next month.
