United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), and Turkey have condemned Sunday’s heinous attack in Mogadishu.
Al-Shabaab fighters stormed Mogadishu’s upscale hotel with a car packed with IEDs before heavily armed men made their way into the hotel and rampage shooting.
The attack on Elite Hotel killed at least 16 people and more than 40 others injured.
In a statement, UN expressed its condolences to their families, and
“UN reaffirms its commitment to and solidarity with all Somalis in the face of such attacks,” the organization said.
In a separate statement, EU also condemned the attack in Mogadishu saying, “the attack reminds us the importance of unity: the EU firmly believes dialogue and trust among leaders prevent and combat terrorism.”
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Ministry strongly condemned a “heinous” terrorist attack by al-Shabab militants.
“We received the news with deep sorrow that today (16 August) many people lost their lives and many others were injured as a result of a suicide attack with a bomb-laden vehicle following a shootout to a hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital,” the ministry said. “We extend our condolences to the brotherly people and Government of Somalia, wish Allah’s mercy upon those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the injured.”
