The UN’s special envoy to Somalia, James Swan has underscored the importance implementation of the recently signed election process agreement
Swan who spoke to Anadolu Agency said the agreement would steer the nation towards parliamentary and presidential elections.
“Completing this electoral process on time and in a consensus-based way that enjoys support from the Somali people is really critical to addressing other priority needs in the country for the benefit of the population,” Swan said.
The remarks of the envoy come on the heel of a call by Somali prime minister, Mohamed Roble to hold meeting to review the recently adopted electoral agreement.
PM Roble said the meeting will evaluate progress since the May 27 Agreement in Mogadishu.
“Somali prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble invited the leaders of the National Consultative Assembly to a meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday to discuss the electoral process achievement since the May 27th agreement and the acceleration of the remaining tasks,” the office of PM said in the statement.
Late last May, Somali Political leaders agreed on a framework for long-delayed national elections which are slated for August this year.
The agreement, that would allow elections within 60 days, was an outcome of the summit convened by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, after months of escalating tension between the political factions in Somalia.
Under the 17 September Electoral Model agreed in 2020 between the federal government and the leaders of the federal member states, verified clan elders would elect a parliament, which then would elect a president.
The parliamentary elections were scheduled for December but then delayed.
