Two regional states in northeastern and Southern of Somalia have opposed new deal on the country’s poll barely a day after four regions and the federal government signed.
In a joint statement, leaders of Puntland and Jubbaland states said they were not represented in the meeting.
Both states who initially turned down the participation of conference said the agreement signed by the leaders has nothing to do with them.
“In respecting the viewpoints of the participants, Puntland and Jubbaland will make clear that points agreed in 19th August meeting in Dhusameeb about the electoral process were personal views of the president of Federaal government, the leaders of Galmudug, Hirshabelle and Southwest,” the statement reads in part.
Remarks of the regions comes a day after federal government and some of the regional states inked a deal on a poll model that involves electoral caucuses.
According to a communique, president Mohamed Abdullahi and leaders of Galmudug, Southwest, Hirshabelle states and Benadir region agreed each Caucus of 301 delegates will elect each MP.
The agreement stipulates that delegates will be nominated jointly by national and federal state electoral bodies.
The agreement indicates that deal will have to be approved by House of the People of Parliament.
