Somaliland to hold its parliamentary poll next year

Somaliland will hold parliamentary elections next year after poll agency and political parties inked in Hargeisa town.

In a meeting, Somaliland electoral commission, Kulmiye, Waddani and UCID agreed elections to be held within nine months.

According to Abdirahman Irro Chairman of the opposition party-Waddani, the parties and the agency agreed on cooperation of the implementation of the process.

“The NEC and the three national political parties(WADDANI, UCID & KULMIYE) finalized today their ongoing discussions regarding the time for the overdue joint elections of the House of Representatives and local governments. They agreed elections to be held within nine months -May 2021,” said Irro.

The current Somaliland Lower House was elected in 2005, and any attempts to conduct elections have failed in subsequent years drawing sharp criticism from the international community.

The elections were last slated for October 2018 but were postponed to March 2021.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in May 1991 but has since not garnered international support for recognition.
