Somaliland authorities have lifted a ban on a UK based Somali television station barely six months after it ordered off air.
In a statement on Saturday afternoon, Somaliland Information Ministry said the station was allowed to resume broadcasting in Somaliland.
“From 10th of January 2021, the ban on Universal Somali TV was lifted and can officially resume its operations in Somaliland,” the statement reads in part.
Somaliland authorities shut down the station in July after it was accused of broadcasting coverage of independence celebrations in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, instead of an address by Somaliland’s president.
The region in northeastern Somalia declared secession from the rest of Somalia in 1990s.
Despite longtime relative peace, Somaliland has failed to gained international recognition.
Somalia and Somaliland merged 1st July 1960, paving the way for the birth of the Republic of Somalia.
