Somalia, Turkish Intels take part in rescuing Italian aid worker

Somalia’s intelligence Agency and its Turkish counterpart have taken part in operation to an Italian aid volunteer who was kidnapped in Kenya some 18 months ago.

Silvia Romano has been freed this week in Somalia.

Silvia who was working at an orphanage in Chakama village near Kenya’s southeast coast, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on November 20, 2018, in an attack that left five residents with bullet wounds.

According to Anadolu Agency, Turkey’s National Intelligence Service (MİT) and Somali National Intelegence and Security Agency (NISA) have jointly rescued Romano alive.

In coordination with Italian counterpart managed to rescue Romano from her captors between Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte tweeted news of Romano’s release from captivity.

“Silvia Romano has been freed! I thank the women and men of the external intelligence services. Silvia, we are waiting for you in Italy!” Conte wrote on Twitter.

It has emerged that Romano converted to Islam while in captivity.

Romano arrived in Rome-Ciampino airport yesterday afternoon aboard Dassault Falcon 900EX flight, operated by Italian Intelligence.
