The Federal Government of Somalia has lauded the people and government of Turkey for their strong stand against the failed military coup in July 2016.
Mogadishu said the move was a strong signal towards the solid democracy and unity among the Turkish nation.
“To our brotherly Republic of Turkey and H.E President Erdogan on behalf of our nation and myself, we join you in prayers and remembrance of the selflessness of your martyrs and the deep resolve of your courageous citizens to protect your Republic. Our thoughts are with you.” President Farmajo said.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister ambassador Ahmed Isse Awad said the relations between the two nations based on mutual trust and friendship were since strengthened by the sacrifice for democracy.
“I congratulate the Government and People of Turkey on the Day of Democracy and Unity. The relationship between Somalia and Turkey is unyielding. It is based on mutual trust and friendship. To better and enhanced cooperation and partnership.” Ambassador Awad tweeted.
Ankara is marking the fourth anniversary of the deadly coup attempt of July 15, 2016, with a series of commemoration events honoring those who lost their lives rejecting the coup.
According to the Turkish Press, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan laid flowers at the Martyrs’ Monument and then attended a program at the Turkish Parliament to commemorate the martyrs. He will meet with victims and survivors of the failed coup attempt and will address the nation later on Wednesday night.
