A court in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu on Thursday sentenced three government officials and a contractor to jail for having a hand in the theft of public funds and and use of public office for personal interest.
The Banadir Regional Court found the four guilty of violating number of the country’s penal cord.
Guled Mohamed Ibrahim, a director of administration in the Ministry of Fisheries was found of guilty stealing public and embezzlement of 37,000 USD from the coffee of the health ministry after he claimed to hired his personal car to the ministry.
The court also established that a sum of $202,000 of public money was deposited into Ibrahim’s personal account.
He was also convicted for the mismanagement of $105,907 during his reign in office.
He slapped with ten years in prison and fine of $2,366. During the ruling, the court also ordered him to return $137,907 to the state.
Ali Sheikh Abdi who served in the office of the Accountant General was also sentenced to nine years in jail. He was ordered to refund the state a sum of $50,855 in addition to a fine of 3,549.
Two other defendants, a father (government official) and a son (contractor) were found guilty of collusion in depriving the state of resources.
The sentences of the officials comes barely four days after four government officials were jail for having a hand in the theft of public funds meant for Covid-19 emergency response.
The officials were slapped with an accumulated jail term of 42 years for embezzlement of public funds and use of public office for personal interest.
