The Federal Government of Somalia has announced a tax increase on Miraa products imported into the country on Wednesday.
According to the Ministry of Finance document, the new tax will stand at 4 dollars per kilogram from the previous 2.5 dollars per kilogram.
“The new Khat tax will be USD 4 per kilo from USD 2.5 as per Garowe agreement.” The document said.
The Ministry of Finance across all the regional states in the country was directed to implement the new tax revenue that is set to boost the economy of the horn of the African nation that is recovering from financial challenges resulted from decades of conflict.
The new developments come as the Khat traders in neighboring Kenya count losses following the ban on the product by the Somali government three months ago over COVID-19 prevention measures.
The traders through Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) called upon Mogadishu and Nairobi to engage for a lasting solution to the current challenges facing the miraa business.
