Somalia halts passport application services to curb COVID-19

Somalia has suspended applications and issuance of passports to stop the spread of coronavirus in the country.

In a Facebook post, the country’s department of immigration on Wednesday said the department will not accept accepting applications from February 27.

Earlier this week, the government also banned public gatherings saying the Covid-19 re-emergence had forced the authorities to enforce further measures to curb the spread of the disease.

For the last 24 hours, the horn of Africa nation has recorded 198 new positive COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 6,444.

The disease also killed seven people, rising the number of futilities 215.

According to the ministry for health, three more people were reported to have recovered from the disease, hence the total number of recoveries is now at 3,781.

Somalia expecting to receive 1.2 million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine this February, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
