Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has today assented to a resolution allowing country’s most populated region to get representation in the parliament.
The resolution allocating 13 seats to Banaadir region in the Upper House was last year endorsed by Somali parliament.
Villa Somalia in a twitter post said the president signed the resolution to give the capital representation in the Upper House parliament.
The total number of the country’s senators will increase 54 to 67 members.
Based on the 2016 arrangement negotiated by then President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed and FMS leaders, Puntland and Somaliland were allocated 11 seats while the rest of the FMS got eight seats each.
The move comes barely hours after Puntland and Jubbaland announced the State Independent Elections Team (SIET) members with each regional state lining up eight members.
The team will oversee the election of Members of Parliament (MPs) through a clan delegates system.
