Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has last night dropped the two-term extension approved by the parliament, pledging his government to hold commonly agreed elections in the country.
Addressing the nation, Farmaajo called on the regional state leaders to discuss means to discuss mean to implement the poll agreement signed by the federal government and its member states, saying his government has always been prepared to implement, without any preconditions, national elections purely based on the 17 September 2020 agreement, and the 16 February 2021 Baidoa Technical Committee recommendations.
“I call upon all of the signatories of the 17 September agreement to come together immediately for urgent discussions on the unconditional implementation of the above-mentioned agreement,”” the president said.
According to President Farmaajo’s address, he will address the country’s parliament on Saturday to seek their endorsement for the electoral process that as agreed upon between the Federal Government, the Heads of Federal Member States and the Governor of BRA.
He called on security agencies to maintain the stability of the capital and the safety of innocent civilians, avoiding any actions that may lead to insecurity.
The president also urged the Somali people provide maximum support and cooperation to our gallant forces.
