Somali National Army (SNA) will carry out operations to liberate villages under the control of al-Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia, military official said.
Speaking to the media, Aden Mohamed Ibrahim, commander of SNA in Jubaland state said the forces will advance to recapture village in Lower Jubba region in the coming days.
Ibrahim noted SNA’s 43rd Unit and Jubaland state forces conducted operations against al-Shabaab following public tip off.
According to Ibrahim, the forces eliminated six al-Shabaab fighters last Saturday during operation on the outskirts of Kismayo town.
“There was a fierce fight between the army and the militants in Koban and Bula Haji villages, but our forces overpowered the militants, killing six of them,” Ibrahim said.
He added that the army also captured many villages and recovered ammunition during the operation.
African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and SNA forces have been on major offensives against al-Shabaab in central and southern Somali regions.
But the militants still hold swaths of territory in those regions, conducting ambushes and planting roadside bombs.
