More than twenty people including soldiers were on Sunday killed and several others sustained after al-Shabaab attacked a military base in Somalia’s central region.
Al-Shabaab used a Vehicle Borne Improvised Device (VBIED) to breach the gate of the base before heavily armed fighters engaged the soldiers.
Somali military officials who spoke to the media said the military repelled the attackers.
“At around 4:30 am, as the soldiers were preparing for the morning prayers, al-Shabaab ambushed them and started with an explosion,” Major Mohamed Mire Mohamud, deputy police chief of Galmudug said, claiming “But they suffered casualties.”
Several soldiers and civilians were killed in the attack, according to officials and witnesses.
In a statement posted on its affiliate media, al-Shabaab claimed to have killed more than 34 soldiers in the attack.
Wisil is a small town located in northwest of the port town of Hobyo town, which is approximately 857 kilometers (532 miles) from Mogadishu.
The development comes amid Somali military intensified operations against al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia.
Somali military claimed to have killed more than 200 al-Shabaab fighters in several operation in Middle and Lower Shabelle region.
