Puntland closes mosques, schools to stop spread of COVID-19

Learning and religious institutions in Somalia’s Puntland state have been closed following a directive by Justice minister.

According to a statement, Puntland Minister for Justice, Awil Sheikh Mohamud has issued the mandatory two-week closure of mosques and religious schools in Puntland.

The ministry said the move was meant to prevent spread of Covid-19 in the state.

This comes barely six days after the federal government announced closure of all learning institutions for 15 days and banned public meetings in a bid to curb the spread of the novel corona virus.

Early this month, the Horn of African nation recorded the first case of the virus.

The government also had announced it set aside $5 million to mobilize response against the viral infection that has so far killed upwards of 7,000 globally.

The measures follow a ban on all flights into the country last week from other parts of World.
