Somali federal government has today said the committees appointed on Wednesday by Puntland and Jubbaland leaders were completely in violation of the legal process for appointing the commissions.
In a statement, Somali minister interior Muktar Hussein Afrah said the list of the nominated committees were not submitted to the office of Prime Minister as per September-17 agreement between the federal government and its member states.
“The Office of the Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia and the Ministry of Interior have not yet received an official statement on the appointment of the Puntland and Jubbaland State electoral commitees,” the statement said.
According to Sep-17 agreement which was signed by federal and state leaders in Mogadishu was articulating that upon appointment of the State Independent Elections Team (SIET) members, the list would be submitted to the office of the premier.
The statement comes hours after Puntland and Jubbaland announced the State Independent Elections Team (SIET) members who will be charged with overseeing the election of Members of Parliament (MPs) through a clan delegates system. Each team is made up of eight members.
