Lower House speaker and opposition leaders discuss elections

The speaker of Somalia’s Lower House of parliament Mohamed Sheikh Mursal held talks with the leaders of Forum for National Parties in his office.

According to Somali National News Agency (SONNA), former heads of states, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed respectively discussed elections and ongoing efforts on COVID 19 response in the country.

The two former leaders who are currently leading a coalition of opposition parties have cautioned President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo government on elections schedule, which is expected to be conducted in February next year.

The head of state has however pledged to conduct the elections on its stipulated time while addressing the opening ceremony of the seventh session of the parliament on Saturday.

President Farmajo signed the election bill into law in February this year.

Under the new election system, citizens will directly vote for parties, with parliamentary seats being allocated according to the final tallies.

The members of parliament will then elect the president and prime minister while the prime minister must come from the majority party in parliament.
