Gov’t, opposition seal deal to end gridlock

Somali government and Council of Presidential Candidates (CPC) have reached an agreement to partially end political gridlock following a meeting between prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and opposition leaders.

According to a communique issued after the meeting, Somali opposition presidential candidates have agreed to postpone the protest slated for today.

The protest scheduled to be held within ten days from Friday after the federal government officially expressed regret over clashes last week in Mogadishu.

“Friday protest was postponed and the opposition will organise another rally in ten days time and government will provide security the protest,” the communique reads in part.

The government also agreed to the appointment of a fact-finding committee to investigate last Friday’s incident.

In the communique, the Somali government extended its condolences to the people and presidential candidates and guaranteed the constitutional right of citizens to protest.

During the meeting, both the government and the opposition agreed to continue talks to end the political uncertainty and pave the way for free and fair elections.
