The Galmudug state of Somalia has signed a new deal with UK-based Oriental Terminal firm to build a modern port in the ancient Indian ocean city of Hobyo.
Minister for Ports and fisheries Abdisabir Shurie signed the contract with the management of the company during a meeting in London on Tuesday.
“I signed a historic partnership agreement with Oriental Terminal, a consortium of Somali, Turkish and British companies for the development of Hobyo Port in the Galmudug State of Somalia.” Minister Sabrie confirmed on Twitter.
The London-based firm that will undertake the ambitious development project is a consortium of three companies from Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Somalia.
As part of the agreement, the first survey team will arrive in the country by the end of this month in order to assess the various approaches to the construction and operation of the port in line with international standards.
Technology and environmental impacts will be key considerations before the second phase of construction which will commence in March 2021.
Once completed, Hobyo Port will create job opportunities, trade that will lead to significant socio-economic development will have a direct impact on the lives of millions in Galmudug state and neighboring states across the horn of the African nation.
