Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has held talks with Ahmed Abdi Kariye, the leader of Galmudug state Tuesday night in Mogadishu.
The meeting between the two leaders focused on ways to resolve differences over electoral process. According sources privy to the talks, Kariye urged the president to reconsider issue of Gedo region.
The leaders reportedly agreed talks between federal government and Jubbaland leader, Ahmed Mohamed Madobe to be held to resolve the impasse over Gedo region.
Jubbaland state leader previously set condition on the elections to take place in Jubbaland state, demanding the withdrawal of federal troops from Gedo region.
Meanwhile, Federal Electoral Commission has called for a political agreement between between Somali federal government and Jubbaland state, for the elections to take place in Gedo region.
Chairperson of the disputed federal Electoral Commission, Mohamed Hassan Irro said Gedo crisis is a political one that needs to be amicably resolved by the federal government and Jubaland leaders.
“As the federal Election Commission, we welcome the proposals of Ahmed Madobe but for the Gedo issue, I can attest to you that it is a matter above our capacity which should be discussed between the government and the Jubaland Administration. They should later instruct us when to initiate the election process there,” he said.
