African Union (AU) has called on the newly elected president of Galmudug State to give priority dialogue and reconciliation to iron out political differences in the state.
In a statement on Sunday, the continental Bloc welcomed the reconciliation conference and elections which culminated in the leadership of the regional State in Somalia’s central.
“AMISOM congratulates all the newly elected members of the Galmudug State Assembly, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, the President and the Deputy President of the Federal Member State of Galmudug and wishes them success in their new positions.”
The Bloc called for inclusive reconciliation conference spearheaded by the newly elected president.
“AMISOM is aware that a lot still needs to be done and urges President Ahmed Abdi Kariye to continue with the spirit of the Galmudug Reconciliation Conference and ensure that all stakeholders that constitute the State of Galmudug have a guaranteed place around him,” AU said.
Presumably responding to leaders of Ahlu-Sunna Waljama who accused AMISOM of siding with one side, AU said it only deployed its troops in Galmudug for purpose helping stakeholders create conducive environment.
“With the support of the international community and partner organisations, and after due consultations with the Federal Government of Somalia and Galmudug authorities, AMISOM deployed forces in Dhusamareeb with the purpose of helping create a conducive environment for a reconciliation conference to take place and supporting the establishment of security conditions to ensure the electoral process evolves in a peaceful and violence free environment,” the statement reads in part.
