Airstrike kills al-Shabaab commander in southern Somalia

Al-Shabaab commander was killed and several others injured in an airstrike in Southern Somalia.

According to SNA official who spoke to the media, US suspected war planes hit al-Shabaab base in Haway village in Lower Jubba region.

“Somalia’s partner forces have carried out aerial bombardment in al-Shabaab controlled village, the attack targeted the fighters and killed one of their leaders and several other fighters. The base was also destroyed,” he said.

The official identified the slain militant as Dahir Moalim.

The development comes hours after Somali military chief confirmed death of al-Shabaab ring leader in Lower Shabelle region.

Odawa Yussuf Raghe, the forces managed to clear al-Shabaab fighters from villages.

“The soldiers killed number of fighters including commander administering villages,” he said.

The chief added that the forces will intensify the operations aimed at flushing out the militants who have been fighting to topple the internationally-backed government.

The government forces have stepped up operations against al-Shabaab extremists in southern regions in recent months, but the militants still control swathes of rural areas, conducting ambushes and planting land mines.
