Airstrike hits al-Shabaab meeting venue, kills top commander

Several Al-Shabaab members including top officials have been killed and unknown number of group’s members were wounded after a missile hit a house in Middle Jubba, military official confirmed.

The members of the group were in a meeting when unidentified warplane bombed the venue in Jilib town, leaving behind huge casualties.

Somali military commander who spoke to a local station in Mogadishu said SNA received Intelegence report indicating the group’s head of amniyat in the town.

It is not yet clear which country carried out the bombardment but it has hallmarks of US attacks.

The development comes barely five days after Somalia’s spy agency tweet that al-Shabaab’s leader Ahmed Diriye handed over the leadership to dispute after he cited ill-health.

National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said Ahmed Diriye had handed over reigns of power to his deputy Abukar Aden.

“For medical reasons, the head of Al-Shabaab has transferred authority to his deputy Abukar Aden amid tussles between Diriye and Mahad Karate who wants be named the supervisor,” NISA said.
